Dog Advent Calendars: What's Inside and Why We Chose Green & Wilds

There's something lovely about a dog joining in the Christmas countdown. Every morning in December, a little door, a little treat, and a very waggy tail. If you've never tried a dog advent calendar, this is the year. As dog walkers, we see a lot of dogs and a lot of treats, so we were fussy about which calendar to stock. Here's what's inside the one we chose, and how to get the most out of it.

Why a dog advent calendar?

It's a small daily ritual you'll both look forward to. Dogs learn routines quickly, and it doesn't take long before they're waiting by the calendar each morning.

It also makes a brilliant gift. If you've got a dog-loving friend, a dog walker, a groomer or a neighbour who looks after your dog, an advent calendar is a thoughtful present that gets opened 24 times.

What's inside the Green & Wilds advent calendar?

The Green & Wilds calendar has 24 windows, each hiding a natural treat. Their recent calendars have included festive favourites like:

  • Goose & cranberry sausage

  • Duck & cranberry sausage

  • Cornish fishcakes with turmeric

  • Fish deli cubes

  • Salmon bakes

  • Yak puff nuggets

There are no artificial fillers, additives or preservatives, and the calendar is plastic free. It's suitable for dogs from 3 months old.

Why we chose it

We ask the same question about everything we sell: would we happily give this to the dogs we walk? With this one, the answer was an easy yes. Many pet advent calendars are full of brightly coloured, heavily processed treats in plastic trays. Green & Wilds is a British company making natural treats and toys, and this calendar feels like a proper treat rather than a sugary novelty.

Our tips for advent calendar success

Count it in their daily food. A small treat a day soon adds up. If your dog is watching their waistline, take a little off their dinner.

Make it a game. Instead of just handing the treat over, hide it and let your dog sniff it out. We play "find it" on our walks all the time, and it turns 30 seconds of snacking into 5 minutes of happy searching.

Keep it out of reach. Dogs can smell a calendar full of treats from across the house. Store it somewhere high, or you may find all 24 doors opened on day one.

Go steady with new treats. If your dog has a sensitive tummy, or hasn't had some of these proteins before, you can break each treat into smaller pieces.

Order early

Advent calendars are a seasonal item and we only have limited stock, so we'd recommend ordering early to make sure you've got one ready for 1 December. You'll find the Green & Wilds advent calendar, along with festive treats and gifts for dogs and dog lovers, in our Christmas section.
